Subscribe at another country’s price with a Google Play gift card
Google Play keeps several country profiles on one account instead of moving it, which avoids Apple’s “clear everything first” problem — but it adds a 90-day cooldown and needs a payment method from each country you add. The VPN and small-first-payment rules apply here too.
Check you are eligible
Google hides the country option entirely when one of these applies, with no explanation on the page.
- You changed your Play country within the last 90 days. This is the single most common reason the option is missing.
- You are not currently located in the country you are adding. Google states this requirement explicitly.
- You are a member of a Google Family. Leave the group first; if you are the manager, the group has to be deleted.
Step by step
- 1. Choose the target region Pick the country from the plan you want on this site, and write the expected price down so you can verify what you are charged.
- 2. Add the country profile On a computer (not the Android app), open play.google.com → profile icon → Settings → Country and profiles → select the country you want to add, then follow the prompts to add a payment method for that country.
- 3. Wait for the profile to settle Google says the profile can take up to 48 hours to update. Switching before it settles is a common cause of failed redemptions.
- 4. Get a gift card for that country Buy a Google Play gift card issued for the target country. As with Apple, the region must match the profile or the code will be refused.
- 5. Switch profile, then connect from that country Still on play.google.com → Settings → Country and profiles, tap the country you want to switch to. Then turn on a VPN with a server in that country and keep it connected for redemption and purchase. Avoid free VPNs: shared exit addresses are blocklisted and read as fraud.
- 6. Redeem the code Redeem at play.google.com/redeem while the target profile is active.
- 7. Subscribe to the cheapest plan first Start with the cheapest monthly plan, confirm the charge matches the price from step 1, and only then move to the plan you actually want. In-app purchases are billed in the active profile’s currency.
In-app purchases, subscriptions and family libraries
In-app purchases and subscriptions are tied to the profile that bought them. If you switch profiles afterwards, previously bought items can look missing until you switch back. Plan for a stable profile for anything you subscribe to long-term.
Start small, then scale up
- Do not begin with a yearly plan or the top tier. The first payment is a test of the whole chain, not a purchase.
- Pick the cheapest plan that proves every link: the code redeems, the balance lands in the right currency, the payment clears, the subscription activates.
- Only after a full successful cycle should you move to the plan you actually want. If something is going to fail, it should fail on a small amount.
- If a payment is refused, stop and check the profile country, the VPN region and the card region before trying again — repeated failed attempts are themselves a risk signal.
